Review :
Adequate book but too complicated
This book gives a very nice overview of PCOS and a concise description of the syndrome. However, the diet plan that she lays out is quite complicated. It involves EXTENSIVE counting of carbs and basically, relies on the glycemic index to determine what and when to eat. For the most part, it is correct but it was too much for me to follow, while trying to cook for a family. Basically, I took control of my PCOS by:

1. Cutting out grains and refined starches (sugar, breads, pastas)
2. Cutting out root veggies (potatoes, carrots, onions)
3. Increasing protein
4. Increasing water.

That's it. That's all there is to it. I even allow myself one small helping of "Carb laden" food a day and have steadily lost weight and increased my fertility.

Seven pound weight loss in just over a week!
I was first diagnosed with PCOS nearly 18 years ago. After feeling as if the medical community completely ignored the condition, I gave up trying to halt the dangerous effects of my diagnosis and simply watched my hair fall out, my weight increase, etc. I've been on medications to counter the effects for over ten years and saw little improvement in my symptoms. Then, two weeks ago, a friend loaned me a copy of this book. For the first time in a long time, I was interested in learning more. I thought I had read it all. Wrong. Not once in all of these years has a physician told me to watch my carbs and that simple timing of the necessary carbs I do eat could really make a difference. I feel like an idiot for not making the connection sooner but, well, here I am. I am only about 12 pounds overweight. Not too bad for someone with PCOS but it is disconcerting because I watch as my weight slowly inches upward, no matter what I do. I don't fry food. I eat fast-food occasionally but...
Very good book! A must read for women with PCOS! Updated info!
Very thorough and informative. From following the meal plan laid out in the book I have already lost 10lbs. in not even a week! This isn't just a "diet" book although it says on the cover. It helped me understand the syndrome. I have read two other very well written books about PCOS and this is right up there with them if not better. The author provides info on studies that are very recent about PCOS. I feel more comfortable about my condition. This book helped me feel empowered with the proper info and tools to tackle this condition. I highly recommend this book to anyone that has PCOS.

Review :
GREAT BOOK - HORRIBLE COVER
My mother gave me this book when I was expecting my 2nd child. I loved it. It was my bible for the 9 months of pregnancy. This book helped me to decrease my labor time by over 80%. I would highly encourage any new mothers who are afraid to read this (but cover up the cover before you give it to them). This book, even though written by a man, still today is a guide to natural childbirth and helping a woman naturally through the great miracle of humanity. Once you read it, it requires commitment and dedication to the principles it teaches, but I can tell you it is very worth the effort. Working with your body, instead of fighting it, is the fundamental principle. A must read for any woman expecting. Just cover the front cover with paper, that is if you want the expectant mother to read it. ~KS

LOVE this book
Explains the process of labor in such detail. Also dives into how fear works against you, and how you can recognize it. His view on women laboring is extremely respectful and encouraging.
I would even say that, this book would be a good read for someone wanting to support, a lady in labor.
Good book to help prepare for labor.

Very intellectual/technical but repetitive and outdated
I found the intellectual and technical aspects of the writing very educational. I also found the basic explanation of why pain occurs during birth [i.e. fear = pain, no fear = no pain] to be enlightening but that was about all I took from the book and if you read this last sentence, you don't need to make the purchase.

I was hoping to walk away with more ideas on how to manage pain naturally throughout the three stages of labor but in the end, the only explanation was "as long as you aren't afraid, you won't have to deal with pain." I just don't buy this..... I mean, c'mon, you put a picture of a screaming woman on the front cover who is delivering her own baby and then go on to say that labor and delivery can occur without any pain? Oh; I see, you use the term "discomfort" instead, right labor is "uncomfortable" not painful. OK.

In addition, the book tells story after story of the experiences of women who were "forced" to take medical pain relief. I found the...

These days, many mothers-to-be find themselves torn between the desire for a natural childbirth with minimal medical intervention and the peace of mind offered by instant access to life-saving technology that only a hospital can provide. In Natural Hospital Birth, doula Cynthia Gabriel asserts that there is no good reason that women in North America should not be able to have both. She shows expectant mothers what they can do to avoid unnecessary medical interventions and how to take initiative and consciously prepare for the kind of birth they want to have. Also included are inspiring stories from other women who know firsthand that natural birth in the hospital is possible. With this book, mothers-to-be will be equipped with the knowledge they need to ensure a satisfying hospital birth that they will look back on with peace and joy.

Review :
hesitant to commit to natural birth? read this book!
Where to begin?? I have one child and am expecting another in a few months. My first labor and delivery was not natural by any means. It was a very typical American hospital birth with plenty of intervention. I didn't find the experience particularly empowering at all. When I found out I was pregnant this time, I started considering the idea of a natural birth. I really didn't think I could do it. My OB said things like "just be flexible, you might change your mind" and "you don't have to be a hero." I doubted my ability to do it without drugs!

Funny that once I picked up this book, I saw Cynthia Gabriel mentioning some of these exact comments I got from my OB as a sign that one's provider was not open or supportive of natural birth. As I read the book, I became more empowered and confident that I could in fact have a natural labor and delivery. And as I was re-reading the book in my 7th month of pregnancy, I decided that I wouldn't have it any other way and set out to...
Best chance to have exactly what the title describes - read this book!
As an L&D nurse, turned doula, turned CNM-to-be, I was skeptical about this book to say the least. I've worked in some of the most medicalized environments you can find in the childbirth world, and I know first-hand all the tricks the hospital staff will use to accomplish their goals while potentially robbing the mother of her own. The terms "natural", "hospital", and "childbirth" don't belong in the same sentence with what I've seen in my experiences over the past 8 years. I'm not sure what I expected this book to be, but I'll say I was so very pleasantly surprised. As I begin my midwifery training, I'll say for full disclosure's sake, I want to work as far away from a hospital (theoretically, not physically) as I can. However, this book is a great tool for women who do still desire to give birth in a hospital but without unnecessary medical interventions. Granted, once you set foot in a hospital, there is a decent risk that things might be done to you that you don't want, but this...
Extremely disappointed
I had high hopes for this book after seeing all of the positive reviews, but as I read this book I went from feeling a little disappointed to being almost angry at the book by the end. I am a birth doula and I bought this book in hopes of picking up some ideas to help my clients who want/have to have hospital births and still want natural births. I didn't get that at all- and I would even go so far as to recommend that the mommas NOT read this book. I'll try to use some quotes from this book to illustrate what I didn't like.

The first thing I took issue with is the overall tone of this book. Basically it says that in order to get a natural birth in a hospital you just have to stand your ground, tell the doctors that you want a natural birth, and keep asking for "one more hour". This may work well if the staff really is pushing for interventions based on scheduling, doctor preference, etc (as does happen unfortunately), but what about situations where there really is a...

Review :
Not for those interested in HOW to coach a childbirth
I purchased this book because my wife is about to give birth and we wanted some final pointers on coaching for natural childbirth. There were none to be found in this book. This is pretty much filled with very vague descriptions of what natural childbirth is like and how it's the job of us coaches to help during delivery. If you're looking for specific techniques you will be reminded ad nauseam that you should have taken the official Bradley class (and you are given much advice on how you can find this class if you haven't taken it already). In fact most of this book just seems to be an advertisement for the class.
I would say if you're a Bradley disciple and you're just looking to be encouraged that you are preparing for childbirth the "right way" then this is for you. This book is definitely NOT for someone who hasn't taken the official course and is just looking for a few tips on how to help your partner/wife/etc. through her delivery.
In fact, if you're not one to...
This book is written for your partner, not the mom-to-be!
I have to admit, when I first got pregnant over 10 years ago I did not read this book, although I signed up for Bradley Classes twice. After a great non-medicated and spontaneous hospital birth and then 5 years later a wonderful home birth, I began to teach the method myself. It wasn't until I was studying to become a Bradley Instructor that I read this book. Quite frankly, it made no difference to me once I read it, because the Bradley Method had already become a part of me, my passion. This book is NOT a stand alone guide for the Bradley Method and it should NEVER be used as a substitute for classes.

It's written for the husband (or the partner who is NOT pregnant). It serves little purpose for the pregnant woman, I do not recommend that my moms read this book. I suggest Susan McCutcheons book instead. But I certainly make sure the husbands/partners don't get away without reading this one! Most men don't find it sexist or even outdated. It's perfect for the guy/gal that...
Annoying narrative style, a bit old fashion
I got this book because I am enrolled in a Bradley Method birth class and very intent on natural childbirth for my first child. However...

This book is hard to read because it is written in an almost stream of consciousness style. Dr. Bradley and or his updaters seem to ramble throughout. Also many of the "facts" are listed in quite an opinion-esque fashion. I know he is a doctor who has delivered thousands of babies and therefore would have an extensive knowledge base, however, many facts he ademantly presents which contradict current obstetrical advice are not referenced to scientific studies but limited to his own experience, which is not scientific enough, in my opinion, to weigh trust on.

Furthermore, he lists some rather bizarre opinions about women and their anatomy that I as a women find to be completely fictious. For example, he states that women who wear underware of any kind including cotton briefs have chapped, dried out perineums that are more prone...

well worth it
I took an aromatherapy weekend seminar as an introductory to this fascinating subject. Was I surprised as to how interesting and versitile aromatherapy is. As a mother of 4 young children,I have always used natural medicine as a first priority and this has saved us many trips to the doctor and many doses of unwarranted antibiotics. I did not realize the potential that essential oils possess until I took the seminar. I bought this book after I took the seminar and have used it lots especially the oil blends for respiratory problems. I also have used her other book called The Fragrant Pharmacy and this book is LOADED with information. This lady knows her oils and is one of the best there is.You won't regret buying it!

Healing Power of Nature
This book is an indispensable guide for every parent who thinks pro-actively about their children's long-term physical and mental health. Powerful, yet safe, aromatherapy is a sound way to treat everything from influenza to sunburn in children. Many complaints such as aches and coughs that might otherwise have to wait for a visit to the doctor can be addressed immediately at home, using the healing power of nature.

Great helpful tips for natural parents!
Love this book! Got 2 copies!!! We have already been using some of these ingredients but this helps a ton with preparation and new ideas!!! Making my cough syrup now!! Thank you!

I wish I had this book when my children were small
This is a book I wish I had when my 3 children were babies. I don't know how many bottles of gripe water, ear ache drops, baby tylenol, and polysporin that I bought when they were little. I started researching natural remedies after they started school, which involved a trip to the public library. There was no Amazon in those days. And no grandma blogger to ask online for advice.

There are recipes for natural substitutes for otc medication I bought for my littles at the pharmacy, like gripe water, earache drops, and fever reducer. I was thrilled to see all the remedies for growing pains, like magnesium cream. It would have been so helpful when my sons went through their rapid height gains and complained of sore shins and sore backs every night.

The book is well laid out in a way that makes it easy to find specific remedies if you are in a hurry, but also very readable if you just want to relax with a cup of tea and read. The photography is bright and bold...
Easy to read guide with tons of resources
I was interested in reading this because we honestly don't visit the doctor's office other than yearly office visits. Together with Dr. Bob Zajac (who is a board-certified pediatrician with a "Western medicine brain" and a natural heart), Ms. Tietje has gone ahead and looked at some of the most common (and maybe less common) things that we face as parents and helps us with some of the basics:

Some of my favorites:
- anti-inflammtory syrup
- magnesium creams

I also like that she makes it easy to read. From the basics raw honey to turmeric, these are all NIH-backed studies that show that sometimes natural remedies work for families and we need not run to the pediatricians office with every sniffle and bruise. Really... it is a waste of the doctor's time, who needs to see those with more pressing issues... and it is a waste of money (insurance costs too, after all!)

Of course like any good book, it does say "when to call a...
