One of the Best
This magazine surprises me. It looks like just another mass media pulp magazine, but it's really solid on the inside. These guys actually go to the shop and do woodworking. They are enthusiastic, thorough, honest, and funny. The articles seem to aim toward the moderately experienced amateur, but there's plenty of stuff for beginners. And the price can't be beat. This and Fine Woodworking are my favorites - put them together and you have everything you need.

Popular Wood Reading
It's very easy to write off Popular Woodworking without even reading it. One tends to assume that it is going to be the Readers Digest of woodworking. One imagines countless overly simplified articles on how to build bookcases or select the right shop vacuum. Actually, this couldn't be further from the truth.

Admittedly, Popular Woodworking is not a high-end magazine. It is for the moderately funded woodworker who wants to get the best out of his or her tools without a huge outlay. It's also for folks who like a wide coverage of the woodworking field. Plans, tools, jigs, wood, techniques, and workshops.

In going through a recent issue repeatedly, I kept finding little articles that I have missed on earlier readings. This is a compliment to the editors in that they try to answer many needs. On the other hand, it indicates that magazine layout and structure is a bit haphazard and cramped. You just have to keep perusing it until everything sinks in. Take...
Popular & Practical Woodworking
While I appreciate tool reviews and tips and techniques for woodworking, what I like most in a woodworking magazine are projects which I find interesting and attractive. I have found Popular Woodworking to be the woodworking magazine that meets my expectations in this area.
Yes, there are tool reviews, which are particularly useful when considering the purchase of a new tool (with prices these days, we need all the help we can get) and there are plenty tips and techniques.
But I do enjoy the projects the most. Don't get me wrong, not every issue has a project I want to tackle (thank goodness, or I wouldn't get anything else done), but I will usually find something that I want to make or that illustrates a method of work which will help me with other woodworking projects. Also, the projects are not just limited to pieces of "fine" furniture, they also include things like functional outdoor woodworking and practical furniture.

Review :
This is not an idea generating or creative magazine
I thought I would try this magazine to see if it really did generate some ideas and creativity. However, (in my opinion) the art work and creativity inside is very lame compared to the covers. You cannot judge this book by the cover as the covers are pretty eye catching, but there are mostly ads and silly stories inside. This may have been a misunderstanding on my part regarding what the magazine's purpose is. So if you want ads and current "thought" on print media this may be good.

Too many ads, not enough content for the money.
This magazine was a required subscription for a design class. Very nice paper used and the cover designs entice me to read, but after opening I have a hard time finding much inspiration amongst the massive amount of advertising. I recommend flipping through it on the newsstand (if you can, there's a ton of heavy card stock ads in there) and maybe buying it whenever you see something of interest. Very little bang for your buck in a subscription.

Print Magazine
Print Magazine has a stiff price for very little substance and lots of advertising. I am disappointed and vote thumbs down for this magazine.

This specific obcject delivers surpass out anticipation, this one has developed into a amazing replace on myself personally, The thought arrived securely and speedily Old Cars Price Guide [Print + Kindle]

OLD CARS PRICE GUIDE is the nation?s most respected authority for pricing antique and collectible automobiles. The extensive price-guide section covers makes and models of domestic cars, from AMC to Willys, from model years 1901 to 1998. Also included are light-duty trucks and selected makes of imported cars. Cars are valued in six conditions ? from ?Excellent? down to ?Parts Car.? Also includes columns and features on collectible cars.

Review :
One only
This magazine can drive car collectors nutty. That being said, however, we have to realize that it's all that out there that counts. The Editor/Publisher could add more "rare" factory models (say, 1955 - 1975), and add more definitive optional equipment listings, but that might use up to much space. I'll keep getting it.

Bait and Switch
First, the picture is incorrect for the Price Guide. I guess this should have been my first clue. The problem is with the print and Kindle edition bundle. Amazon indicates that you can get both the print and Kindle version for your purchase. Unfortunately, it's only after you make the purchase that you are told the Kindle version is only available for the Kindle Fire. So, I was left holding the bag on this one. It would be nice if Amazon was upfront with their product. I was very disappointed in Amazon.

Too Slim, Needs coverage of 1985+ cars
The prior issues had more information on a longer span of year models. Was once the best guide. Now it is not maintained well.

Review :
A Great Magazine For The Music Enthusiast
Goldmine is a music magazine that caters to record collectors. The cover stories and articles deal with all types of music (rock, r & b, pop, country, jazz, reggae, punk, alternative, etc.) with the greatest emphasis on artists who were popular in the '60s and '70s. Recent cover stories include interviews with surviving members of the Grateful Dead, the Rolling Stones, AC/DC, the Four Seasons, and the Dave Clark 5's lead singer Mike Smith. There are also annual issues devoted to Elvis Presley and the Beatles.
Each issue of Goldmine contains reviews on recent cd releases (new product and reissues/collections). There are also country and jazz sections that contain interviews with vintage artists (recent country interviews include Bobby Bare, Guy Clark, and Merle Haggard) and cd reviews. The country section also provides helpful info like upcoming tv appearance and cd release dates, while the jazz section offers esoteric essays from jazz historian Carlo Wolff. Dahl's Digs...
Great Magazine for the Vinyl Nuts!
I've been collecting vinyls for 6 years now. I only recently discovered this magazine and subscribed imediately. There are a lot of great infor about artists of all kinds, record collecting and venues for finding them. The front page always has a frame worthy photo. It is a great added addition to a fun hobby.

Intelligent Musical Guide
Finally, A musical magazine that is not mired down in sophmoric humor for stoned college kids. One that actually focuses on the integrity of music for its reviews, delves into the deep history of artists and their albums with great research. It does weigh a bit heavy on music pre 1980 but that is to be expected due to the age of most of the writers. A great resource for those who are collectors of vinyl, and cds; although they could use more information of what is collectible and give more prices in each edition. While you won't get those glossy photos of jessica simpson barely clothed, you will enjoy insightful writing on the music and career of musicians both popular and obscure. I highly reccomend this for music lovers.

HOW magazine's goal is to help designers, whether they work for a design firm, for an in-house design department or for themselves, run successful, creative, profitable studios. HOW strives to serve the business, technological and creative needs of graphic-design professionals. The magazine provides a practical mix of essential business information, up-to-date technological tips, the creative whys and hows behind noteworthy projects, and profiles of professionals who are influencing design.

Review :
The business of design... not design of design.
This would be a great magazine for someone who either owns thier own design business, a pro freelancer or an art director who is high up on the food chain in an agency. Not very good for an entry-level design student such as myself. This magazine is first and foremost about the business of graphic design: how to promote your business, attract and retain clients, how to deal with a team of designers.

There are very little, if any, how-to's or design theory covered in this magazine. There isnt even much in the way of showing off of good design examples. Only some examples of "best-of" works that you have to really search for, and there isnt much in the way of advanced critiques of said works.

The "Guide To Self-Promotion" special section for subscribers was probably most benificial for me, because there was a nice little section on resume's and interview tips. However, you will find that most of that info can be found for free on the internet anyways.

As...
Money Well Spent
This magazine really fills the voids that design school leaves behind. I have developed some serious guts in fighting for what I am worth due to this publication. When you are a new designer, you get taken advantage of frequently. College did not prepare me to stand up for myself in this competitive market, and this magazine not only keeps you up-to-date with the latest in the design realm, but also serves as a gutsy, motivational read as well. This is a must have subscription for budding designers. What a relief to read a killer design publication from the midwest!

THE Magazine for the Commercial Graphic Artist!
I have been buying copies of this magazine in New York City newsstands for years now. I think the first one I picked up was because it contained listings for graphics compatitions. But, I was an evolving graphic artist in Rochester, NY ... educated in Architecture, and teaching myself the rest of what would become my career - Graphic Design. Pen & Ink, masking, layouts, the evolution of a logo design ... all the techniques and steps laid out in feature articles which focused on the work of an individual or design studio at the top of their game. And in between were the articles on how to negotiate a contract, how to present your ideas to a client .. how to GET clients.
It's full of images ... less talk. We are, afterall, visual artists and know we learn best through what we see.
This is a worthwhile magazine to get. You'll find something useful every issue.

Review :
Best of the watercolor quarterlies
The quarterly magazine "Watercolor Magic" features well-known artists such as George Gibson, Carolyn Lord, Stephen Quiller, and Janet Fish, who share their inspiration and techniques with the readers. There's always something in each issue for both beginning and advanced watercolorists. The magazine is packed with color photographs--even the advertisements are interesting. I only wish it were published more than four times a year.
One of my favorite features is the "Swipe File" where readers share tips and techniques, such as how to apply frisket with a feather, transforming plastic Christmas light separators into brush holders, and constructing a mini-sketch kit.
Here are examples of some of the features, taken from tenth anniversary February, 2003 issue:
"Ten Tales of Passage: Past and Future Perfect" - Ten artists talk about their careers: how they started, where they're going, how to connect with people who might enjoy their art...
Best Watercolor Magazine
I am a watercolor artist and instructor. My friend who is also a watercolorist gave me a subscription to this magazine for my birthday. It is full of useful information, hints, and inspiration. You will love every page of every issue.

Fun!
I have to admit I look forward to this coming in the mail. I am a beginning watercolor artist and I greatly enjoy this magazine. With each issue you get to look into the styles of different artists. They don't just tell you about the artist, they show you tips and give ideas. A more advanced artist would probably get quite a bit more out of this magazine then me. There are even articles about how to sell, and how to market your art. I look forward to using the new techniques!

Wow
I accidentally happened upon the August 2005 issue and couldn't believe the cover was a pastel. I have dabbled in pastel recently and quickly snatched this up. There are lots of beautiful photographs of contemporary works with features on the artists' themselves, some of which have step by step photos of how the work was achieved. The downside is that there are only 6 issues per year. The back of the magazine has an extensive listing of pastel courses/workshops/exhibitions throughout the US and internationally, taught by prominent pastelists.

I'm amending this review. I got a subscription and the delivery was horrible. I often did not get issues unless I emailed the company, or they came very late. It seems as if they're extremely disorganized - I'm not sure what's going on, but I did not continue my subscription. Beware!

Great gift - Pastel Journal subscription

What a surprise for my artist friend. She
called right away to thank me. Said it was a great gift since with each issue she learns and is inspired.
Nothing could please me more than to hear the gratitude in her voice.
Thanks Amazon for fast processing!

Some excellent, some poor
I find this is worthy of a subscription to keep up with info, artists names, and some excellent art. I find some issues have artists with horrible compositions, weak or incorrect values, inconsistant light sources, or temperature control in paintings. I am open to abstracts, tight realism, loose impressionism, surrealism, etc but ALL SHOULD have correct design principles and fundamentals. About every 3 issues is a winner with 7/8 of the artists strong but some of the other issues you are lucky to find 1/4 that don't look like they are a novice.

I purchased a subscription to this magazine for my father, who loves old cars. It is not a beautiful publication, but it comes every week and he seems to thoroughly enjoy it. The publication style fits those who hang out in cold garages and scrounge for parts!

Great Value
I bought this for my father and he couldn't be happier. The price is great for the quality and detailed information. It was delivered well before the projected date.

Just a great magazine
I have subscribed to this magazine for several years now, it is not a fancy magazine by any means, but rather a very informative and readable articles in it...it is top of the line in covering old cars..I love seeing the old wrecking yards..sort of makes me want to go out and rescue some of those great years of my favorite body styles.

Great Military Vehicle magazine
I have subscribed to this magazine for many years. The stories are great and the pictures are wonderful if you are looking for help in restoring a Military Vehicle or not.

Next to the MVPA mags, the best.
Excellent, basic foundation for managing your military vehicle habit. I think MV modelers would get value from it as well.

Brings back memories and plans a new
Te stories are great. Being in and out of the military for decades make it fun to see vehicles that I used to work on as a mechanic from Vietnam to the wars in the early nineties. This book helped me pass the vehicle recognizing tests.

Now I enjoy thinking of what I could be doing if I had the room. I do have the room for the kits advertised.

You will find hours of fun perusing the articles on museum collections and come close to buying that rare part that only a coffee table can use. Cannot throw away the older volumes. Now with the kindle you can carry your favorite volumes with you where ever you go.

Good gift for Dads!

One only
This magazine can drive car collectors nutty.
