keeping up with the trends
As an artist, I need to be "in the know" a bit, and ARTnews is one of the 3 magazines I subscribe to for this purpose.
I use it primarily for: # 1, the ads, which are mostly gallery ads, and let me know what is showing, and where. # 2, the exhibit reviews (N.Y., National, International), for the same reason as # 1, and the classifieds, which sometimes give a competition notice not available elsewhere.
Regular departments include: "ARTtalk", which is the lighter side of the news, and "National/International News", which has more of a business slant, obituaries, etc.
Each issue has a "theme". The November 2001 for instance, has fashion design, with 3 articles on art/fashion, and one on Mary McFadden's sculpture collection. It also has "The New Climate", about art after 9/11, from a response by several artists to the loss of a 100 million $ in art.
Also included is a large section on new art books, and the obligatory...
And then there is ARTNews
ARTnews takes its hits from readers: paper is not high quality, the inks smear after a couple of readings, there is a lot of `outsider art' in the ads and a lot of competitions, schools, prizes etc most of which seem to stress entrance fees over artistic interest, and the reporting seems weighted to out of focus art shows. But there must be some reason it is still around, despite the competition. ARTnews is a quick read, lots of things happemn between its coevers, and it seems to be of more interest to working artsts than to the big gun collectors and museums. That is fine: the art world is bizarre enough in its diffuse goals (when there are some evident!), and this journal seems to satisfy the casual magazine collector. The writing by contributing editors is definitely improving and some of the critiques are very eloquent. A good bargain art periodical

Beware Higher Prices on Amazon Site
This magazine, Artforum International and Art in America are all higher on the amazon.com site than on their respective web sites. Super-natural coincidence, or profit-taking?

Beware ArtNews web price, too - in the magazine, they are charging 19.98 for 11 issues, but not on the web.

This magazine comes out once a week...
This magazine comes out once a week so you will stay up-to-date with the hobby. One of the features of this magazine is the monthly price guide. This is a supplement to the actually magazine you get. In the price guide, tons of US coin prices are listed. This price guide is a retail price guide, not wholesale.

Another one of my favorite things about the magazine is the weekly mintage page. On this page all the mintages for what the mint has made in 2005 are listed. Wondering how many silver proof sets were made? What about the Kansas state quarter? You can find the answer of all of these in the magazine.

Now to the articles. I personally find them okay. They are not bad and some are very interesting, but I would not say that they are outstanding. They do cover a diverse array of topics. A plus about the articles is they will keep you up-to-date. Was there a major auction or a large show? A record price or a major rarity discovered? You will find...
Numismatic News
I've been a collector and dealer before retiring. I have always been confident about info in N.N. Articles are well written and timely.Even though i'm no longer a dealer,i like to keep updated on the market.

Geared to the collector/investor so lots of great data!
I subscribe to this because I like the fact that it has all of the up to date info on US mint programs, machinations, mintage reports and auction gossip with results, etc. It also has a very active classifieds section and super coin dealer ads. In addition there is the obligatory spec piece on overlooked and undervalued coins/coin segments, etc. which probably don't amount to a hill of beans actually but always get one to thinking about the particular coin/coin segment highlighted in the particular article. An oddly compelling part of the magazine is the letters section where very opinionated people tend to bash each other over the course of two or three issues. It is a lively and engaging part of the magazine-newsweekly that would be sorely missed if it were ever cut out. Also there is often a guest opinion or two from some of the coin world's heavy weights and/or notables. Every other issue or so there is an insert that lists either upcoming auctions and coin shows, or a table...

Review :
One of the Best
This magazine surprises me. It looks like just another mass media pulp magazine, but it's really solid on the inside. These guys actually go to the shop and do woodworking. They are enthusiastic, thorough, honest, and funny. The articles seem to aim toward the moderately experienced amateur, but there's plenty of stuff for beginners. And the price can't be beat. This and Fine Woodworking are my favorites - put them together and you have everything you need.

Popular Wood Reading
It's very easy to write off Popular Woodworking without even reading it. One tends to assume that it is going to be the Readers Digest of woodworking. One imagines countless overly simplified articles on how to build bookcases or select the right shop vacuum. Actually, this couldn't be further from the truth.

Admittedly, Popular Woodworking is not a high-end magazine. It is for the moderately funded woodworker who wants to get the best out of his or her tools without a huge outlay. It's also for folks who like a wide coverage of the woodworking field. Plans, tools, jigs, wood, techniques, and workshops.

In going through a recent issue repeatedly, I kept finding little articles that I have missed on earlier readings. This is a compliment to the editors in that they try to answer many needs. On the other hand, it indicates that magazine layout and structure is a bit haphazard and cramped. You just have to keep perusing it until everything sinks in. Take...
Popular & Practical Woodworking
While I appreciate tool reviews and tips and techniques for woodworking, what I like most in a woodworking magazine are projects which I find interesting and attractive. I have found Popular Woodworking to be the woodworking magazine that meets my expectations in this area.
Yes, there are tool reviews, which are particularly useful when considering the purchase of a new tool (with prices these days, we need all the help we can get) and there are plenty tips and techniques.
But I do enjoy the projects the most. Don't get me wrong, not every issue has a project I want to tackle (thank goodness, or I wouldn't get anything else done), but I will usually find something that I want to make or that illustrates a method of work which will help me with other woodworking projects. Also, the projects are not just limited to pieces of "fine" furniture, they also include things like functional outdoor woodworking and practical furniture.
This is one of only two woodworking...

You can get this magazine on the magazines website for 18.95 for one year or 24.00 for two years. I was amazed to see that amazon.com was more expensive!

A Wonderful Read
I have bought all issues of Rock & Gem since I discovered it a year and a half ago. It features lots of pictures, good articles, activities for the kids and ads are kept to a minimum.

If you love gemstones and collecting gem minerals you will love it.
I have loved this magazine. It has new finds of gemstones and minerals fasinating articles and great finds of where to purchase minerals and gems. If you love gemstones and minerals this magazine is for you. The best magazine find yet. Also, if you like minerals you should try the magazine ROCKS AND MINERALS [...] and published by Heldref publications.
Happy gem hunting....
